A Little Light Reading

IMG_2116

I love old books, and somewhere near the top of the list of old books I love are old Catholic books.

In fishy news, the algae in my aquarium was starting to get a little out of control, so I finally broke down and bought a pleco. He’s feisty and he’s grumpy as hell, so of course I adore him. And he’s small enough that he won’t mess with the other fish. Yet.

I’m still trying to figure out how to use my camera, especially indoors, without flash. I took a bunch of photos last weekend at one of my mom’s friend’s houses, and while some of them turned out fine, the results were inconsistent. When I’m at home, I can stop and load images onto my computer to check myself (those little LCD displays are useless). Not so much when I’m away from home, though.

This one was taken in manual mode, and it actually turned out. Progress!

Hosea 13:14 & Psalm 23

Covenanter Cemetery, Bloomington, Indiana

I will ransom them from the power
of the grave; I will redeem them
from death; O death I will be thy
plagues; O grave I will be thy
destruction. Hos. 13 & 14

Yea though I walk Death’s dark vale
Yet is it I fear no evil
for thou art with me and thy rod
and staff me comfort

This is presumably a fragment from one of the headstones. It was just lying in the grass. I don’t think it’s a section marker, because this is a really tiny cemetery.

I think this might be my favorite photo from yesterday’s set. It reminds me of The Silver Chair, when Jill, Eustace, and Puddleglum stumble into the words “UNDER ME.” I started to crop it square, but decided that I preferred it like this. I also think that it looks better viewed at full size.

My Favorite Birthday Book
Grosset & Dunlap, New York, 1945
Illustrated with Persian Miniatures by Mahmoud Sayah
7 1/8 x 14 1/4 inches

I started scanning this last January, and I meant to post the pages for each month throughout the year. Better late than never, right?

Holy crap! There’s a copy of it on eBay with a “buy it now” price of $100. Alibris has a copy listed for $50 and AbeBooks has copies going from $38-$99. Those are all, I think, unmarked copies, which mine is obviously not. I think I’d rather have a well used copy with no intrinsic value. It’s more interesting to me.
