Words Stick In Your Throat
Words Stick in Your Throat

I finished filling up another half-full sketchbook with gluebook collage. This one was left over from art school, so it contains everything but the kitchen sink. There are even combinations to my old painting locker and watercolor flat file in the back of it.

It was only fitting that I squeeze in a Gauguin image. I wrote a huge paper on his Manao tupapau (Spirit of the Dead Watching), for a post-impressionism class. The professor made a funny comment after handing it back to me (I got an A). She said she couldn’t figure out what I thought of Gauguin, himself. I didn’t like him much then, and I like him even less now. He created beautiful things, but he did so by colonization.

Patio Time

Thomas and I had some quality time on the patio this weekend. He was such a total ass the first time I put him on a tie-out that I never tried it again. He was much better this time, though, so it looks like he’ll be able to hang out with me outside this summer.

Working

I spent Monday working on a mini-project. I tore out a bunch of portraits from some US history books, mostly of ugly dead white men, because that’s what US history books are full of. Then I divided them into piles of left facing, right facing, and more or less straight-on. Then I started tearing them in half and remixing them.

The way some of them fit so perfectly together is a bit creepy.

I love old luggage and train cases, and this adorable little guy has the best of both. It used to belong to John Gee, one of the drawing teachers in the art department where I went to school. He passed away recently. My brother does web design and database work for his wife-now-widow, and he got to pick a few items of John’s to keep. He thought I’d like this one, so he sent it to me. It’s cute AF.
