Rain

Rain

We had an impressive storm this morning. Tons of rain, tons of lightning, tons of evil clouds, and a respectable amount of wind, too. No tornadoes though, thankfully.

In other news, I am LOVING my new phone. As much as I hate Apple, they make some seriously appealing gadgets. I’ve been coveting an iPhone for a long time, so now that they’re available with Verizon (don’t get me started on the many ways AT&T has pissed me off!), I decided it was time to get one. It has not disappointed. The only down side so far has been installing iTunes on my computer. It may work great on a Mac, but on a Windows machine it is nothing but malware. Other than that, though, it’s been a thoroughly delightful experience. I suspect that the more apps I add, and the more uses I find for it, the more I’ll love it.

Mary By Candlelight

The electricity was still out this morning as I was getting ready for work, so I had to shower by candlelight. Something about a nightlight lit by candles struck me as funny.

I know I should be feeling thankful (and I am!), because no one here was killed or even seriously hurt, but looking at all the destroyed trees around town makes me a little weepy. So many trees, and apparently all from straight-line wind. I think we had a final total of five tornado warnings, before it was all done, but the only confirmed tornado, that I know of, was south of here, near Bedford. Like I said, we were lucky, even though it’s still kind of painful to look at.

Walmart was closed today, to give you some idea of the extent of the damage. Walmart! Closed! Have you ever heard of such a thing?!

Danger Will Robinson!

The tornado sirens went off. AIEEE! I get emergency warning texts from the university, and according to IU there was a tornado spotted in the campus area.

Have I mentioned how much I hate storms? They scare the everlovingcrap out of me.

On a more entertaining note, I freaking love this song. I don’t know why, but it makes me happy.

Gust Front

A storm hit yesterday afternoon. Lots of trees down all over town, and some folks won’t have electricity until tonight or maybe tomorrow. It was the leading edge that caused the damage, because of the high winds. After about 15 minutes things quieted down, and after that it was just a rain event. But when the gust front hit, AIEEE! The wind was unbelievable.

We only lost one tree in the back field, which amazes me. The ground is so super-saturated, and tree roots are so shallow, that I expected we’d lose more. There were hundreds of trees down around town, though. Lots of property damage, but from what I’ve heard there were no serious injuries.

More storms are forecast for tonight. O joy.

That red dot below Indianapolis is me. I’m really hoping that the tornado watch we’re under doesn’t turn into a tornado warning (counties northeast of us are under one right now). And if it does, I hope that IU’s emergency warning system is working properly, because I can barely hear the storm sirens from my bedroom. They aren’t loud enough to actually wake me up, but an email notification should.

I really, really, really hate tornado season.

We did not lose power! Yay for that. Comcast crapped out early yesterday evening and didn’t come back up until this afternoon, so I was without cable, Internet access, and house phone for the night. That’s only a minor annoyance, though. As long as the electricity is on, I’m happy!

I’d say that we got somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 inch of ice at my house, judging by the accumulation on my car. So not so bad. Definitely not as serious as conditions a little west of us. I’m guessing that being on the southern edge of the ice band was to our benefit.

The only casualty was the seal on my rear car doors. I thought I’d better clear off the car and let it run today, because it would only be more difficult if I left it until tomorrow, when the temperature is supposed to be down around 5F. The only problem was getting into the car, as the doors and door handles were completely iced shut. I finally managed to get one of the rear doors open, but in doing so, the seal popped off. Then, when I tried opening the opposite door from the inside, that seal popped off, too. The driver’s side door is fine, though, and I didn’t bother with the front passenger side door. Hopefully the rear door seals aren’t significantly damaged. Hrmf! But at least it’s running, and I’ll be able to get to work tomorrow.

I think I’m officially OVER this winter. As far as I’m concerned, it can go die in a fire. A toasty, warm, blazing fire.
