Mr. Chipmunk

Isn’t he cute? I love his itty bitty ears and his bright beady eyes. He usually comes out of his hole in the early morning, and spends a few minutes sitting and scoping out his domain. There are a lot of birds and other predators around, so being cautious is a good idea. He picked a great spot for his den, though. He gets a little bit of protection from the balconies overhead, because the larger raptors aren’t likely to come that close to the buildings.

I also saw a yearling deer this morning, moseying along just off my patio. I wasn’t quick enough to get a picture of him, though.

Vole or Mouse Skull from Owl Pellet

I got a bunch of small bones, including an intact skull, from a friend, who got them at a DNR workshop. The bones are from an owl pellet. The pellet contained a large amount of fur, this skull, and assorted other small bones, including several tiny jaw bones with intact teeth. The skull is about 1 1/4 inches from top to bottom, to give an idea of scale. It’s tiny and very delicate.

Mr. Worm

It’s still raining, or at least, it’s drizzling and misting, which is probably just as irritating to the folks who are trying to engage in traditional Memorial Day activities.

This little guy was wriggling around on my patio this morning. I couldn’t get a properly focused photo of him, because he wouldn’t hold still for me. Not to be gross, but somehow worms and remembering dead people seem to go together.

Jumping Spider

It’s summer time, and you know what that means: pictures of spiders and other assorted creepy crawlies! This little guy (I think it’s a male) is a fishing or nursery web spider. He was hanging out on the outer wall of my building, near the downspout. He didn’t like having his picture taken, and kept crawling around and giving me the evil eyes (eight of them!). He fidgeted so much that it was difficult to get a completely focused photo of him.

Isn’t he gross and meaty? Also, hairy.

Jumping spiders don’t use webs to catch prey. They go out and hunt for it. Their silk is used to as a sort of safety line. If they jump and miss their goal, they can climb back up and try again. Jumping spiders are fast, which is necessary for their method of catching prey. They are not particularly aggressive, and usually won’t bite unless threatened.

Mr. Raccoon

We had a visitor last night! A young adult raccoon ambled onto my patio while I was making supper. I think he must have smelled the cooking food, and was investigating his chances of getting in on the action. It was too dark to get a photo of him through the window, and there’s no way I was going to go outside with him there, so you’ll have to take my word for it.

Raccoons are crazy cute, but the possibility of them carrying diseases–like rabies–is too high to risk contact with them. Also, they can be very aggressive. This little guy was awfully brazen. He came right up to the patio window, where Harriet was doing her best Cujo impersonation. She was literally throwing herself at the glass. Not very smart of the raccoon to stick around, which makes me even more leery of him. Rabies is a neurological disease, and one symptom is the inability to properly gauge danger. Rabid animals do stupid things, like attack critters much bigger and meaner than themselves.

Supper, by the way, included fried tofu. It is most tasty. I’m not a big fan of tofu (the texture, it doth offend!), but I do like it sliced very thinly and either Shake-n-Baked or dipped in a mixture of about 2 parts soy sauce, one part water, and a few drops of worcestershire sauce, sprinkled with garlic and onion powder, then fried in olive oil. It gets crispy and leathery, which is much preferable to mushy and chalky.

Before going to bed last night, I took out the dog and called the weather line. The temperature was 46F. Anyone want to guess whose air conditioner was running?

This has been floating around for awhile now, but just in case there is anyone out there who missed the darling otters, check it out. Right now.

And if you need a chaser for all that cuteness, there ya’ go. Never before have I been faced with the realities of simultaneously peeing my pants with laughter whilst vomiting. And, on second thought, perhaps that explains the laughing gnome? Hmmm.
