Since I was stuck at home today, waiting for maintenance to come inspect my fire extinguisher, I put some of my time to good use, cleaning the kitchen. I even took the rug outside and gave it a good shaking, before vacuuming it.

Keep Out
The bank I have my car loan with “upgraded” their website about six months ago. In doing so, they completely broke it. I was no longer able to make payments through the website, because the default payment amount was the pay-off amount. Um, I don’t think so! That meant that I had to pay by phone, which I hate, hate, hate. Every time I had to call in a payment, I complained about their broken website. And every time I complained, the customer service rep told me that they’d never had any complaints before. Yes, you did, from me! One of them told me that the box to change the payment amount was there, but I must have missed it. Uh, no, I’m really not brain dead. Another told me that there must be something wrong with my browser, despite the fact that I told him I’d tried it in Firefox, IE, and Opera.
It’s been frustrating. They really shouldn’t make it difficult for me to give them my money.
So, today I log into my account, expecting to see the steadily-shrinking-but-still-much-larger-than-my-bank-balance pay-off amount. But no, they’ve (finally!) more or less fixed the problem. I can now pay the current amount due, and I can even edit the payment date. I can’t edit the actual payment amount, which is kind of a pain in the ass, because I usually round up. I’m not complaining, though. At least I can pay online again, and that’s the important part.
Gum
Yes, gum. There are a bunch of old study carrels in the ground floor hallway, presumably on their way to surplus. The bottoms of almost all of them are plastered with fossilized gum. God only knows how old it is. It’s been a long time since chewing gum was “not allowed,” so I’m assuming kids don’t have the same incentive to hide it under their desks and chairs these days. Maybe I’m wrong, but the “newer” chairs that are also on the way out do not have gum stuck to undersides of the seats.

Two Kittens in a Tree
Polly and Henry got a new tree today.
At first, they were suspicious of it and pretended to ignore it. I picked up a bunch of their toys and put them in the two circular beds, then sprinkled a little bit of cat nip in them, for good measure. I picked up Henry and put her in the lower bed. She jumped out. Lather, rinse, repeat. Then I did the same with Polly. Then I picked up both cats and popped them into the beds. They sat there a few minutes, then they started bopping each other on their heads. Last I checked, they were curled up asleep, in their new beds, in their new tree.

Turning
A Fishy Conversation
My aquarium had a horrible algae bloom over the summer, which turned the water dark green. Not very nice! It’s pretty well cleared up now, and the fish seem happy. They’re fun to watch (when the water isn’t too cloudy), because they are pretty much joined at the fin. They’re almost always right next to each other, whether they’re cruising around the tank or digging in the rocks for leftovers. When I get up in the mornings, they’re usually resting under one of the plants, side by side and head to tail.
