Winter

It’s supposed to get down to 3F tonight. This is not typical December weather for this area. We usually don’t get serious cold until January, and even then, not repeatedly or for long stretches.

On the bright side, the colder weather is partially due to the fact that the sky is clearing. The Geminids are peaking tonight, so if it’s clear enough, I’m hoping to see some meteors. They should be visible anywhere with a clear sky, so if you’re outside tonight or early tomorrow morning, LOOK UP!

And, of course, I can’t think of meteor showers without thinking of this song (the audio and video quality are quite good, for an audience recording).

Emily by Joanna Newsom

The meteorite is a source of the light
And the meteor’s just what we see
And the meteoroid is a stone that’s devoid of the fire that propelled it to thee
And the meteorite’s just what causes the light
And the meteor’s how it’s perceived
And the meteoroid’s a bone thrown from the void that lies quiet in offering to thee
