Cirrostratus

Cirrostratus Clouds Before Sunset

The clouds thinned and thickened and thinned again today, but they never cleared away completely. I stopped at the grocery store after work, and as I was leaving, I got out my camera and took a couple of photos of the sky.

Cirrostratus are sheets of high, wispy clouds. They are usually thin enough to see the sun and moon through, and they often produce beautiful halos and arcs. When these clouds thicken, as they were starting to do toward the west (the darker area to the lower right), it usually means that a front is approaching. We’re supposed to get snow and all manner of icy foulness starting tonight and lasting for, I think, about 24 hours.

Cloudy

I’m really starting to get tired of the rain and the fog and the endless grey, grey, grey. The sky actually cleared for about ten minutes this afternoon, but it didn’t take long for the clouds to come back and cover up all that lovely blue. And, of course, the forecast calls for more rain tonight and tomorrow. Ugh.

About the only nice thing I can say about the weather is, at least we haven’t had an ice storm. Yet.

Dreary Day

I took this yesterday, and then tarted up a little bit in Photoshop (I added lots of cyan, because, um, I felt like it). There were some amazing rolly-polly clouds with fringy bits along one edge.

Today, it’s been wet and gross. It’s rained all afternoon and evening, and it’s supposed to keep raining until midnight, with the temperatures dropping all night until they reach the low teens. Aieee! I hope the rain stops before the temperature dips too much, because I’d rather not deal with a bunch of ice.

Searching

I just noticed that this template is lacking a search form. Eeep! All is well now. I’ve stuck one at the top of the center column at the bottom.

Funnily enough, the code supplied in the WordPress documentation did not work. I lifted this directly from my previous template, and it seems to be working fine.

And, another toy cam photo, just because I can.

February Sunrise

The one thing I hate about winter is the lack of light. The long nights and grey days really start to bother me after awhile. About this time of year, because I’m up early in the mornings, I start to see the days begin to lengthen. It’s not much, yet, but every little bit helps.

I no longer have a long drive east in the early mornings, which is probably just as well. I miss the sunrises, but with daylight saving time, I wouldn’t have gotten to see them anyway. And, guess what? DST will be starting even earlier this spring! On March 11, I believe. I guess I’ll just add that to the long list of things that I’m cranky about. It could be worse. At least I work on the one floor that has lots of windows.

Indoor Outdoor Photos

A few, final ice photos, taken this afternoon and evening:

The top two were taken from my patio, and the rest were taken from the 3rd floor of the main campus library, overlooking the parking lot and Jordan Ave. I almost didn’t try to take any of the indoor-outdoor photos, thinking the window glass would muck them up. I’m glad I did, though, because I love the way the architecture frames the images.

Ice: Epilogue

We lost power yesterday afternoon at about 3:00. It was out for just over 24 hours.

Do you have any idea how cold it can get in 24 hours, with no heat? Yikes! Sleeping last night wasn’t so bad, because Harriet stayed tucked under the covers with me, and she’s a very good hot water bottle. Getting up this morning was kind of awful, though. I was actually looking forward to going to work, where it would be warm, but the university was closed until noon. Hrmf! Come to find out, the library was actually partially open, and I could have gone in and hung out in the cafeteria. Because in addition to no heat, there was no cooking.

Thankfully, power came back on at about 4pm, or Miss Brown and I would have had to stay in a hotel tonight. It’s still c-c-c-cold in here, even though the heat’s been on for a couple of hours. I’m not sure I’ll ever warm back up again.

This morning and afternoon, I decided to go out and take pictures. It was gorgeous outside, with all the trees and shrubs looking like crystal-encrusted chandeliers. I figured, since it was as cold outside as inside, I may as well have something to show for freezing my ever-loving butt off.

The weather folks were threatening snow, snow, and more snow, with a possibility of rain and ice. We got a little bit of snow, but it was mostly rain that froze and turned everything pretty and slippy-slidey. Obviously, I’m taking an ice day.

It could be worse. I just got off the phone with my mom, and up north it’s blizzarding. Ball State is actually closed. I can count on two fingers the number of times the university has closed in the past 25 years. On the first, it was just night classes that were cancelled. The second closing occurred during winter break, when the entire city was shut down for a blizzard-related state of emergency. Classes weren’t in session, so it wasn’t like a real school closing.

It sounds like it’s pretty awful up there, so I guess I should be glad we just got the dreaded wintry mix and not a full scale blizzard. Still, it’s bad enough. The temperature is supposed to drop tonight, and we’re supposed to get more snow on top of all the ice. O ick.
