I don’t understand why people hate dandelions. They’re bright and sunny, and when they first pop up their heads in the spring, you know that winter is finally over. Plus the early bees depend on dandelions, because they bloom before just about everything else.

This little guy has kept my catnip well pruned.
And yes, that’s catnip green and growing in February. You can’t kill this stuff. It is literally a weed.
Butterfly Bush in January
My neighbor gave me a sickly, end-of-season-clearance start of butterfly bush the summer before last. I put it in the ground, thinking it wouldn’t last the winter. When spring came around, I couldn’t see any growth and assumed it had died off. Then sometime in mid-summer, it decided to rejoin the living. And now it WILL NOT DIE. Everything was encased in ice a few days ago, but this stupid plant is still putting out new leaves.

I feel guilty because I take more photos of Henry, but it’s only because she’s lighter in color and easier to photograph.
I was annoyed when someone stole a couple of my large planters last spring, not so much because of the planters themselves, but because they took the one over Pandora’s grave, with the catnip plant in it. They dumped the dirt out on the ground, though, and apparently enough of the roots survived that the catnip has regrown. Or maybe it’s zombie catnip? It’s survived one frost already, so it seems like it’s pretty sturdy. Hopefully it’ll be back next year.
