Friday Random Dogblogging

IMG_2331

It’s been awhile since I posted a photo of my neighbors’ Boxer puppy, Kayla. She now has a housemate, Maya the yellow Lab. Maya is super sweet and pretty darned cute. I love her little forehead wrinkles. It bugs me that they leave her out on the balcony, though. Unlike Kayla, who is more chesty, Maya can obviously slip through the railings.

Also, that tongue? The very definition of cuteness.

Itty Bitty Kidney Beans!1!!!

The couple who just moved into the stompy girls’ apartment (across the hall from Mr. Upstairs) have a baby Boxer puppy. Oh mah gawd! The cuteness is nearly paralyzing. I’m guessing she’s about 10 weeks old, plain fawn with little white dancing toes. She’s all wrinkles and wriggly kidney beans. While I was petting her, she squirmed and slid around in her skin, like it was 10x too big for her. She reminded me of a little kid playing dress-up in her mother’s clothes: it’s hard to believe she’ll grow into them someday.

YouTube Goodness

We had a Fake Blog assignment to use YouTube. I thought I’d share the video I used for that assignment. The dogs belong to one of the dog group folks.

Rooroo

It is beautiful, especially that last, lone, plaintive roo.

When I was a kid, we had a dog who rooed (Bear). He taught other dogs in the neighborhood to howl along with him. I remember, in the summertime, when the windows were open, the neighborhood dogs hanging around outside the little Methodist church building and “singing” hymns along with Dorothy Humbarger.

I Can Has the Precious?

I ran to the grocery store this morning, to buy more pears. They had a fairly decent selection, so I got four different kinds, two of each. As I was unbagging them and setting them on my drafting table, I suddenly realized that I had a dog plastered to my side.

She’s been sitting like that for about 15 minutes now. It’ll be interesting to see how long she holds out.

I think it’s safe to say that she really likes pears.

1901 Edison Film of Boxer

I came across this yesterday, and thought I’d post it here. It’s an Edison film from 1901 of a Boxer doing what Boxers do best.

Historical images of dogs are interesting, in terms of how breeds change over time. The Boxer breed was quite young when this film was made (the first Boxer dog was entered into the studbook in 1895). Photos from those early years are rare enough, and video rarer still. This film is extra special. You can see that the boing boing boing–such a huge part of what makes a Boxer a Boxer–is present. Boxers as we know them now, in this country, are finer boned and more elegant than their ancestors, but it’s obvious that the breed’s athleticism and basic personality traits (boing boing boing!) are still present.

La Roux

La Roux was abandoned and is being fostered by a friend of mine. I’m guessing she’s about 16 weeks old and about 30lbs. Her coat is deep stag red sable. She’s got the tiniest little line of white hairs on her nose (the world’s smallest blaze!) and small white bib. Her foster mom thinks she’s a GSD mix, but I’m seeing Collie. Maybe Collie x GSD? We don’t know anything for sure about her, though, except that she is growing like a weed. She is pretty mellow, and she’s been sticking to me like a burr ever since I picked her up this afternoon.

Miss Brown’s nose is, surprisingly, not disjointed. However, she wants terribly to play with La Roux, and La Roux is Not Interested, Ma’am, not one little bit. Boxers do not play like herding breeds, so I don’t sense that these two are going to be BFF. I’m just pleased that Harriet did not try to eat La Roux. I wouldn’t trust her for two seconds if my back were turned, though, so I’m watching them like a hawk.

Behold, the cuteness:
