A coworker gave me a box of cat butt magnets. How cool is that?!

In Trash Bag News
After a sucktacular couple of days, there was finally a bright spot. And, no, it ain’t the weather. I just went down to the cafeteria, and on my way back, lo and behold! The water fountain outside the Kent Cooper Room is sporting a black trash bag! I’ve made a note to go out that way when I leave, so I can get a picture.
Yes, folks, I’m excited about a trash bag. One must learn to take delight in the small things, no?
Cell-u-lar
I hate phones, but I have nonetheless joined the ranks of the cellularly afflicted. My mom keeps nagging me to come see them, and aside from impending car repairs (which will be done soon, damnit!), I’m really not keen on going on road trips with no emergency safety net. So, I ordered one of those pay-as-you-go phones. I’m not at all the sort to chat on a cell phone, and if I become one of Those People, I can upgrade. For now, though, it’s $10 for 30 minutes of air time, and it’s good for 90 days. That seems reasonable to me. The coverage map shows that I should have decent reception between here and my mom’s house (assuming I go through Indy), as well as excellent coverage at my house.
I don’t know why this weirds me out so much, but it does. Aaack!
That is all. As you were, comrades.
Dramatic Lemur Is Dramatic
Bzzzzzzzzzzz
I can hear chainsaws grinding away. Yesterday’s wind must have knocked down trees. I got home last night to find that someone’s trash had been blown all over my patio. It was mostly Bud Light cans (ugh), but I did a thorough pick-up, in case there were bones in it. I found a grocery bag stuffed with a used turkey carcass, not long after Thanksgiving, so I’m a little paranoid about things that might hurt Miss Brown.
I haven’t looked at the weather forecast, but the storms seem to be over. We had a high of 52F yesterday, so I was a little surprised to feel sleet hit my face when I left home this morning. It cooled off significantly overnight.
Tower of Babel
I just went downstairs to get something to drink. It’s kind of crowded in the cafeteria and on the escalators, and I was struck–once again–by how much I enjoy letting all the different languages swirl around and wash over me. Sometimes, the library feels like a miniature UN.
Auntie Em!
Wind gusts of 37.9 mph! Aieee! On the high seas, that’d be a moderate gale-force wind. I’m in just about the most solid building in town, and it sounds like a convoy of dump trucks is circling the building.
Perks
I periodically get requests to give references for former students who are looking for “real” employment. I love it. Love, love, love it. I’ve had pretty excellent luck with hiring good kids, and it makes me ridiculously happy to see them make the transition into the real world.
Today, I got a background check request for one of my old students. Apparently, he’s trying to get a job with the federal government. He’s a good, steady, thoughtful worker, and he will, I’m sure, make any employer happy. I wish him luck, and I hope that his potential future employer has the foresight to hire him.
55 Days
Still no sign of Harry Potter, though on checking my Netflix queue, I see that he’s gone from “very long wait” to just “long wait.” Three discs should be shipping today. One of them will likely be MoolaadĂ© (it’s supposed to be released tomorrow), plus two more discs of Lost.
I’ve also been looking forward to the DVD release of The Red Balloon. It’s been listed as available “Jan 2008” for a few months now. It’s February 4th, and it’s still in the “saved” section, and it still says it will be available “Jan 2008.” M’kaythen!
